Mohini- The Enchantress

The fight between good and evil has always remained a part of this universe, one such time. A great battle between the Gods and the demons for control of the universe was amid the action. In this battle the demons had managed to obtain the Amrit, the nectar of immortality, and the Gods were needed to get it back else you know demons would rule the entire universe. Evil, no?

Now in order to prevent the demons from drinking the Amrit, Lord Vishnu decided to take on a new form - the form of a beautiful woman named Mohini. Mohini was so beautiful that the demons were enchanted by her. Then Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini approached the demons and offered to distribute the Amrit, but made a deal with them beforehand. That she would give the Amrit to the Gods first, and the demons would be given later.

(She would give them something else to drink than Amrit. Smart move Mohini!)

The demons agreed to Mohini's proposal and she began to distribute the Amrit. She gave it to the Gods first, but somehow two demons Rahu and Ketu, aware of the plan, disguised as Gods went & received the Amrit in line. The other Gods noticed their deception and they informed Mohini. She immediately took on her true form as Lord Vishnu and beheaded both, preventing them from becoming immortal but since they had already drunk some of Amrit; their head & body got attached to each other as immortals.

This is the story of Lord Narayan's Mohini Avatar! He enchanted the demons in the form of Mohini! The story goes to show that even the most powerful foes can be defeated with creativity and strategy.

And that is why Mohini Ekadashi is celebrated for thanking & paying gratitude to Lord Vishnu and his Mohini avatar for keeping the demons from becoming immortal and ruling the universe.
